Location

First of all, you need a location. Where are you going to be the most comfortable and productive? It could be a corner in your bedroom, in the living room, in the garage or perhaps you are lucky enough to have a spare room.

It doesn’t matter where you choose to set up your office but, it is important to pick a place where you will have the least distractions. It also good to make sure that you will get some privacy while working.

Try to set up strong boundaries, where all work related items stay in your workspace and all non-work items such as the remote control stay outside your workspace. Also, if you choose to set up your office in the living room for example, try to stick to your workspace only and don’t levitate towards the couch.

Budget

Once you have decided where you are going to set up your office you will need to start thinking about all the items you need to fill it and how much they are going to cost. Make yourself a budget for items like furniture, paint, plants internet, utility bills etc. This way you won’t overspend on items you do not need.

Furniture

You will need a good sturdy, reliable desk and comfortable chair. When it comes to your chair don’t forget to factor in ergonomics. You don’t necessarily have to buy these new.  Search online on websites like eBay and Gumtree for low-cost bargains. If you do find a good deal online and find they are far away, you can use websites like Shiply to get them delivered.

Storage

Get creative with storage. If you are short on space, then set up some nice cheap IKEA shelves or if you have plenty of space then invest in a nice bookcase.  Just keep the clutter off your desk as clutter is a major distraction.

Lighting

It’s important that you have plenty if natural lighting. Also, you can add a desk lamp if you feel you need it. It is also a good idea to paint the colour of the room a warm and bright colour (although not a distracting colour). If you can make sure the room you are in has a window and locate yourself near it.

It’s also a good idea to add a few plants to your work space.

Now, all that’s left to do is get to work.
